WSU Extension Pierce County Master Gardener

Since 2022, Tana has devoted her time, energy, and expertise to both the WSU Extension Master Gardener Program and the Master Gardener Foundation of Washington State. Her leadership has elevated the foundation’s professionalism and strengthened its partnership with the statewide program. Known for her strategic vision, integrity, and warmth, Tana builds lasting relationships and inspires others through her example.

Tana is a dedicated leader and advocate at both the county and state levels of the WSU Extension Master Gardener Program. She has contributed countless hours to leadership roles in Pierce County and actively supports local foundation chapters through outreach, committee work, and mentorship. Her enthusiasm and collaborative spirit have fueled both major events—like the AEC and the Northwest Flower & Garden Festival—and smaller community projects. Though she never seeks recognition, Tana consistently uplifts others and has helped build a more connected and inspired Master Gardener community.

Tana’s legacy within the WSU Extension Master Gardener Program is one of steadfast dedication, thoughtful leadership, and service. She approaches every role—whether at the county or state level—with humility, gratitude, and a genuine desire to uplift others. Her legacy is one of connection—between people, between organizations, and between communities and the land they steward. Through her dedication, integrity, and boundless enthusiasm, Tana has helped shape a stronger, more inclusive, and more resilient Extension Master Gardener Program. She is not only a leader but an inspiration, and her contributions will continue to benefit the program for years to come.

The WSU Extension Master Gardener of the Year award recognizes an exceptional WSU Extension Master Gardener volunteer who has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the Extension Master Gardener (EMG) Program. This award is sponsored by the Master Gardener Foundation of Washington State.

The recipient of this award is someone who has truly gone above and beyond in their efforts to promote and enhance the EMG program by providing leadership at the state and county levels, has had significant statewide or broader impact on the EMG program, and has made a lasting contribution to the Program.

Nominations will be accepted from county WSU Extension Master Gardener Programs and submitted only on the WSU Extension Master Gardener of the Year Nomination form. Only one nomination can be accepted per county chapter per year. This is an individual lifetime award.

WSU Extension Spokane County Master Gardener Program

Tim epitomizes the vision, mission, and values of the WSU Extension Master Gardener (EMG) Program, empowering Master Gardeners and the community through his commitment to environmental stewardship education. He is a man of integrity with a deep dedication to education and community development. Tim has been involved in the WSU EMG Program for 25 years.

He promotes strong program and foundation relationships by incorporating ideas and feedback from both the state foundation and the state program into his work.

Tim provides continuous, active support for the Extension Master Gardener Program through community, statewide, and national publications and presentations, as well as committee involvement. He collaborates with faculty at WSU to publish evidence-based information that is available locally, regionally, statewide, and nationally.

He has played an integral role in statewide Extension Master Gardener curriculum development, both in the past and through his work with Green School. He is an author of multiple chapters in the PNW Gardener’s Handbook: Growing for the Future, a well-known and respected instructor for both adults and youth—including in the community college system—a co-PI on a USDA grant for Integrated Pest Management, and a certified arborist.

The WSU Extension Master Gardener Program relies on Tim’s knowledge, expertise, and unwavering commitment to ensuring the availability of high-quality resources.

This Lifetime award recognizes someone who has had a significant statewide (or broader) impact on the WSU Extension Master Gardener Program or has acted on behalf of the Master Gardener Foundation of Washington State. Nominees need not be an Extension Master Gardener (EMG).

Nomination forms will be made available in the spring of each year.

About Ed LaCrosse (1927-2020)

Ed LaCrosse was a gifted leader with integrity, commitment, a legendary
knowledge of native plants and a willingness to educate and bring together community volunteers. Ed completed his Master Gardener training in 1991 and was active for 25 years in a variety of roles.

He served at King County EMG Clinics, plant sales, and became a board member and President of the King County Master Gardener Foundation in the 1990s. He went on to be a Board Member and President of the Master Gardener Foundation of Washington State (MGFWS), 1999-2006, and served as Historian.

In 2008, the MGFWS Distinguished Service Award was renamed the Edward LaCrosse Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his commitment, involvement and service. WSU recognized his contributions to the EMG Program with a dedication and planting
of a Sequoia tree with plaque at the WSU Research Center in Puyallup.

Ed was named WSU Extension Master Gardener of the Year at the 2010 Master Gardener Advanced Education Conference in Vancouver, Washington. In 2013, the mayor and City of Kent recognized Ed for over 15 years of coordinating Volunteer Services at the Neeley-Soames Historical EMG Demonstration Gardens in Kent. He was a member and Steward of the Native Plant Society, spoke often for the King County EMG Speakers Bureau on Native Plant Gardening, and led the development and maintenance of the Native Plant Garden at Wesley Homes in Des Moines, WA.

While Ed was honored with emeritus status in 2012, our state-wide WSU Extension Master Gardener program continues to enjoy the benefits of his legacy. Link to Ed’s Obituary

Joyce expertly threads the WSU Extension Master Gardener mission throughout all her media efforts. She understands the importance of telling a compelling and impactful story—whether she’s sharing upcoming events or highlighting program impacts—all through the lens of our program priorities. She connects the dots between the horticultural information being learned and taught, and the environmental and community health benefits that gardening provides.

Joyce is highly skilled in using social media, plays a key role in publishing a weekly local program newsletter that reaches 350 volunteers, and serves on the statewide communication committee, helping to shape the powerful and meaningful WSU Extension Master Gardener message. She consistently brings fresh ideas, crafts engaging content, and offers unwavering support to her teammates.

Her positivity shines through in everything she does—uplifting the group and fueling collaboration. With creativity, dedication, and an always-encouraging spirit, Joyce makes a lasting impact. She always brings joy to her Master Gardener volunteer role.
