April Moments of Momentum and Meaning

Spring Momentum, Statewide

April brought visible signs of growth—both in our gardens and across the WSU Extension Master Gardener Program. As the growing season took hold, so did renewed energy around education, outreach, and community connection.

2025 Impact Report Highlights

One of our most significant accomplishments this spring was the release of the 2025 WSU Extension Master Gardener Program Impact Report. In 2025, 3,526 certified volunteers and 678 interns contributed more than 316,000 volunteer hours, supported by over 40,000 hours of continuing education. Through 3,870 plant clinics, volunteers answered more than 63,000 questions and reached nearly 128,000 Washington residents with research-based gardening education.

The report reflects the wide range of topics Master Gardeners address—including soil health, pollinators, water conservation, climate resilience, wildfire preparedness, and the physical and mental health benefits of nature. Together, these efforts strengthen communities and protect Washington’s natural resources.

Plant Sales and Public Engagement

April also marked the early wave of plant sales across the state. Counties worked tirelessly to propagate plants, educate the public, and welcome community members back to these popular events. Plant sales remain one of our most visible educational touchpoints, and I thank our Master Gardener Foundations and all involved for making them successful.

Investing in Program Leadership

April and May will include a strong focus on recruiting and onboarding new county coordinators. As long-serving coordinators transition, we are fortunate to welcome new professionals committed to Extension values. I am especially grateful to seasoned coordinators and volunteer leaders who provide mentorship during these important transitions.

Strengthening the Foundation Partnership

Ongoing conversations with Foundation leadership continue to focus on updating governing documents to strengthen alignment with the WSU Extension Master Gardener Program. This work will support clarity, shared purpose, and increased capacity to secure resources for our statewide mission.

CougsGive: Thank You to Our Supporters

During CougsGive, we were grateful for the generosity of our community, raising $14,515 from 34 gifts in support of the WSU Extension Master Gardener Program endowment. These funds directly support the current and future development of Green School and Master Gardener continuing education, ensuring volunteers have ongoing access to cutting‑edge horticulture research and science‑based training. Thank you to every donor who invested in the long‑term strength and impact of our program—your support helps cultivate learning, leadership, and resilience across Washington communities.

Personal Notes from April

April also brought meaningful personal moments. I attended WSU Parents Weekend to cheer on my niece, whose designs were featured in the 43rd annual spring fashion show, Solstice. Being on campus—and advocating for our program during brief visits with university leadership (Dean Khosla and Provost Riley-Tillman)—was energizing and affirming.

I also had the joy of attending my soon‑to‑be daughter‑in‑law’s bridal shower, a reminder that strong relationships, like healthy gardens, grow through care and presence.

Gratitude as We Grow

As we move deeper into spring, I extend my sincere thanks to our volunteers, coordinators, faculty, staff, and partners. Your dedication ensures the WSU Extension Master Gardener Program continues to flourish.

Thank you for all you do to help Washington grow.
